Gay Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is one of the most well-known gay destinations, and for good reason! The city offers a variety of accommodations ranging from quaint queer-owned B&Bs tucked into the hills, beachfront resorts with balconies overlooking the ocean, luxurious boutique hotels, and even exclusive villas. PV also has many clothing optional resorts and accommodations. Many hotels in the area have on- site pool party bars, and offer day passes if you aren't staying on the property. PV's open atmosphere, charming architecture, cheap drinks, rowdy nightlife, and sunshine attract gay travelers from all over Mexico and the world! Playa de Los Muertos is the center of the action. The section of beach in front of the Blue Chairs Resort is where you'll find a myriad of colorful speedos. Groups of friends share beverages and mingle under the tropical sun. This area is very social, and it's easy to meet new friends. Vendors selling anything from souvenirs to on the beach massages roam the beach so make sure to have cash. Check out Blue Sunset Bar or Mantamar Beach Club if you're looking to relax by the infinity pool with a cocktail. The sunsets here are epic! Looking to get into the ocean? Many tour providers arrange all-day boat parties, snorkeling excursions, whale watching, and even sunset cruises to private islands. Zona Romantica, the "gayborhood" and PV's old town is where you'll find colorful historic buildings dripping in tropical vines. Walk the cobblestone streets to find taco stands, fresh seafood restaurants, open-air coffee houses, and of course lots of places to sip on an afternoon cocktail. The neighborhood is also known for showcasing local Mexican designers and artists. Make sure to pop into one of the many galleries or boutiques. By night, bars begin to spill into the streets, and you can hear pop anthems as you walk through the neighborhood. Most gay bars are clustered around Lazaro Cardenas and Olas Altas street. You'll find a wide variety of drag shows, dance clubs, video bars, piano lounges, strip clubs, and PV's multistory bathhouse Spartacus complete with a rooftop pool. Heading North after crossing the Rio Cuale, you'll find downtown Puerto Vallarta where gay bars are replaced by traditional Mexican Cantinas. This area has some great souvenir shopping, good food options, and some decent beachside club, but be sure to expect a mixed crowd. Continuing North you'll find all inclusive luxury resorts geared toward families. If you're looking for a chance to pace, take a taxi or bus to the neighboring state of Nayarit where Sayulita and the town of San Francisco are known for their artistic relaxed atmosphere. A Note on Safety: PV has been a queer travel destination for many years, but petty crimes such as pickpocketing are common especially at crowded clubs or on the beach. Make sure to be aware of your surroundings especially when inebriated.
